Inflation and Fuel Crisis in 2006


IER held a workshop on Inflation in Iraq and Fuel Price on 30 September 2006. The Iraqi economy during the last months has witnessed a continuing rise in the rate of inflation so that the highest rate of 70%, with the possibility of further increase.  As the statistics indicate, the rise in the proportion of spending on fuel in the family budget is about 40% of total household expenditure.  Given the widespread unemployment and the most stable incomes are the result it will inevitably spread of the phenomenon of inflation is the decline in purchasing power, the real income of individuals.  This study tries to shed light on the causes of inflation and looking at the role of various government policies, including the fiscal and monetary ones, necessary to reduce inflation and therefore mitigate the negative effects resulting from it.
